What is the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme
If you have an environmental permit for a waste operation, your organisation will already have to demonstrate that they comply with the requirements of one of two government approved schemes. The CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme is one of those schemes. It was designed to allow permitted waste facilities to demonstrate they employ technically competent people with the knowledge and skills to ensure waste sites comply with the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

There are two parts to the scheme:

Primary Competence (when the technically competent person completes the qualification, units and/or training programme(s) required to manage their waste site)

Continuing Competence (when the technically competent person undertakes a test every two years to demonstrate they have kept up to date with industry changes).

The permitted waste management facility is required to have at least one confirmed Technically Competent Manager (TCM) available on site for an appropriate amount of time each week. This is known as an attendance requirement. When the TCM takes time off, they facility must arrange cover for them.​
