Recovering F-Gas
The refrigerant gases utilised in air conditioning systems contain fluorinated gas (F-gas) and ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Because these substances are extremely harmful to the environment, people who work on these systems must prevent the accidental release of these substances into the atmosphere. Vehicle mechanics and technicians are therefore required to hold a qualification to evidence that they are competent to handle F-gas. This requirement also extends to depollution operatives and vehicle dismantlers who are expected to remove the refrigerant from end-of-life vehicles prior to dismantling and recycling. Previously the F-gas requirement was enforced by the European Union F-gas Regulation (EC842/2006 and Annex to Regulation EC307/2008). However, since Brexit, the UK government has retained this legislation under the F-gas regulation in Great Britain, which came into force on 1st January 2021.
